A loss estimate, module specification and amplifier rating are inputs to a design; none is the complete design.
In this guide

1. Identify the operating mode at both ends

Start with the exact module and source-document revision at each endpoint. Record the host electrical application separately from the line-side framing, FEC, modulation and operating frequency. Preserve any required host software, module firmware and thermal or power conditions.

Use the coherent operating envelope to define the fields. Consult the documented coherent reference only within each model and source revision; a similar mode name is not enough to establish peer interoperability.

2. Describe the complete route

Record span lengths, measured or estimated attenuation, connector and splice losses, passive components and the complete filter path. Keep the signal's required channel width separate from the module's tuning step. Document any mux, demux or ROADM passband the signal crosses.

Classify the intended path as unamplified or amplified. On an unamplified path, retain the loss estimate, engineering allowance and relevant receive conditions. On an amplified path, add amplifier locations, gain and noise assumptions, channel loading and launch-power plan.

Use EDFA selection to organize amplifier requirements. Check minimum and maximum loading conditions; aggregate optical output and per-channel power are separate limits.

3. Reconcile the optical envelope

Compare the selected mode against the complete set of documented conditions: transmit and receive power, OSNR with its reference bandwidth, dispersion range, channel filtering and the host power or thermal envelope. Keep receiver sensitivity, operating overload, total input power and absolute maximum ratings distinct.

  • Identify the source and conditions for every limit used in the plan.
  • Separate measured route values from illustrative estimates and engineering allowances.
  • Keep missing OSNR bandwidth, unspecified FEC or conflicting limits open.

The source conditions register preserves unresolved source gaps. Do not use amplifier gain as a subtraction that proves a path is feasible, or convert a dispersion limit directly into guaranteed reach.

4. Preserve a conditional engineering record

Complete the coherent planning worksheet with the exact endpoints, route, line components, source conditions and unresolved items. State which values are documented, estimated or measured.

The review record should make it possible to trace each proposed operating condition to a source and each measured result to a specific configuration. Peer-mode, host and line-system evidence all remain necessary before declaring the connection qualified.

Export the worksheet for the line-design review. Keep field observations in the support observation record, linked by the same endpoint and route identifiers. The website records your inputs; it does not calculate or approve an amplified design.

Sources and applicability

This planning sequence uses the existing coherent and EDFA references. It does not simulate an optical line, resolve source conflicts by inference or certify a WBN model's performance.

  1. Coherent operating envelope and source links

OIF application scope, peer modes, optical conditions and host requirements.

  2. EDFA engineering references

Manufacturer documentation on amplifier operation, loading and optical limits.

  3. Open source conditions

Unresolved limits are retained rather than silently reconciled.
