Start with the endpoint allocation
Write down each endpoint's transmit/receive positions and any destination grouping. Use the connector view defined in its documentation. Physical position numbers are not automatically optical lane numbers.
Follow the complete channel
Trace through patch cords, adapters, trunks and cassettes. A component's polarity designation is only one input; the assembled path must connect the intended transmit positions to the intended receive positions.
Keep a testable record
Save the exact A-to-Z position map and leg association with the assembly. Check the installed channel against it using appropriate polarity and loss testing. If a leg changes, verify its destinations again instead of relying on a drawing that only looks symmetric.
In practice / Worked example
Compose the maps. Then check the endpoints.
In this illustrative path, A→J preserves position numbers and J→Z reverses a 12-position array. Normalize both drawings to the same numbering at junction J, including the adapter relationship.
| Starting position | At junction J | Final destination |
|---|---|---|
| A1 | J1 | Z12 |
| A2 | J2 | Z11 |
| A11 | J11 | Z2 |
| A12 | J12 | Z1 |
This excerpt shows continuity destinations, not transmitter lanes or a complete channel design. Check every populated transmit position against its required receive destination in both directions. Label connector-face versus cable-entry views; a visual reversal must not silently become a wiring change. Keep polish and mating-key requirements alongside the full map.
