Name more than the shell

Record connector type, fiber population, polish, pinned/unpinned condition and key orientation for each end. Use the released drawing to resolve the exact mating requirements; color alone is insufficient.

Check the mating pair

For MPO, the pinned and unpinned sides must be complementary. Verify the polish and keying arrangement for the actual components. Do not assume that a connector appropriate to one multimode application suits every other multimode interface.

Declare the viewing direction

A connector-face view and a cable-entry view reverse what appears left and right. Label the view and position numbering on the drawing before discussing polarity. Keep physical orientation and the strand map as separate, explicit properties.

In practice / Worked example

Build the mating record first.

Suppose an equipment drawing specifies a pinned MPO-12/APC receptacle. Record its actual mating requirements rather than reducing the interface to “MPO.”

Check Illustrative record
Equipment interface MPO-12/APC · pinned
Cable mating end Matching MPO-12/APC · unpinned
Populated positions Copy from the equipment drawing
Key / position 1 Use the drawing’s stated viewing convention
Inspection adapter Suitable for the MPO format and APC polish

Complementary pins and matching polish do not establish the strand map. Do not infer fiber population, key orientation or polarity from the shell designation. The inspection adapter must provide a suitable view of the complete end face.
